The Procedures and Requirements for Chinese Visa Application (updated in October, 2023)

As of March 15, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Malta will adopt the following new requirements for Chinese visa application.

1. Application Procedures

①Online application at https://cova.mfa.gov.cn. Confirmation page and full form (8 pages in total) must be printed with signature on the confirmation page and item 9 of the form.

 Submission: Documents shall be submitted to the Embassy in person from 9:00am to 12:00pm in the morning of every Monday or Wednesday.

2. Regular Documents required

① Visa Application Form and the confirmation page.

② Passport and a photocopy of the data page.

③ One ID photo that is: in color, taken within the last 6 months, in full-face view directly facing the camera, in front of a plain white or off-white background, sized 48mm x 33mm.

④ Proof of legal stay or residence status in Malta (applicable to applicants from third countries).

⑤ Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who used to have Chinese citizenship ).

⑥ Itinerary information

Applicants with categories L, M, F, G, J2, Q2, S2, X2 should provide round trip air tickets and applicants with the other visa categories could provide one-way flight. Applicants may also be required to provide the accommodation (such as hotel reservation/assumption of responsibility for hosting etc.) when applying for visa.

Issued to those who intend to go to China for exchanges, visits, study tours and other activities.

An invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China.

G

Issued to those who intend to transit through China.

An onward air (train or ship) ticket with confirmed date and seat to the destination country or region.

J1

Issued to resident foreign journalists of foreign news organizations stationed in China( with intende duration of stay in China exceeding 180 days)

Refer to the requirements of the competent authority.

J2

Issued to foreign journalists who intend to go to China for short-term news coverage( with intended duration of stay in China being no more than 180 days)

Refer to the requirements of the competent authority.

M

Issued to those who intend to go to China for commercial and trade activities.

Documents on the commercial activity issued by a trade partner in China, or trade fair invitation or other invitation letters issued by relevant entity or individual. 

 L

Issued to those who intend to go to China as a tourist.

Itinerary materials such as round-trip air ticket and hotel reservations or Invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China (A copy of the inviter's ID is required).

Invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China. The invitation letter should contain:

(1) Information on the applicant(full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)

(2) Information on the planned visit (arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, etc.)

(3) Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)

Q1

Issued to those who are family members of Chinese citizens or of foreigners with Chinese permanent residence and intend to go to China for family reunion, or to those who intend to go to China for the purpose of foster care (with intended duration of stay in China exceeding 180 days.

"Family members" refers to spouses,parents, parents-in-law,sons,daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughtes.

(1) An invitation letter issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China.

(2) Photocopy of Chinese ID of the inviting individual or foreign passport and permanent residence permit.

(3) Original and a photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between applicant and inviting individual.

Q2

Issued to those who intend to visit their relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with permanent residence in China. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.

(1) An invitation letter issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China.

(2) A photocopy of Chinese ID or foreign passport and permanent residence permit of the inviting individual.

R

Issued to High-level talents.

Confirmation Letter for High Level Foreign Talents.

S1

Issued to those who intend to visit foreigners working or studying in China to whom they are spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18 or parents-in-law, or to those who intend to go to China for other private affairs. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

(1) An invitation letter from the inviting individual (a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies)

(2) A photocopy of the inviting individual's passport and residence permit

(3) Original and a photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of immediate family members between applicants and inviting individual.

*In case of other personal affairs, relevant supporting materials shall be provided upon request.

S2

Issued to those who intend to visit their family members who are foreigners working or studying in China, or to those who intend to go to China for other private matters(with intended duration of stay in China being no more than 180 Days).

"Family members" refers to spouses, parents, parents-in-law, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughtes.

For visiting family members for a short period, the following documents are required:

(1) An invitation letter issued by the inviting individual(a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies)

(2) A photocopy of the inviting individual's (a foreigner who stays or lives in China for work or studies) passport and residence permit

(3) A photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between the applicant and the inviting individual.

*In case of other personal affairs, relevant supporting materials shall be provided upon request.

X1

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.

(1) Original and photocopy of the Admission Letter issued by a school or other entities in China.

(2) Original and photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202).

X2

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days.

Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China.

Z

Issued to those who intend to work in China.

“Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit”or the original“Foreigner's Work Permit”

3. Who don’t need to apply for a new visa.

①Foreign nationals who subject to mutual visa exemption agreements, or

②valid foreign permanent resident permit ID card,

③all kinds of valid residence permits,

④holding valid APEC Business Travel Cards (Virtual ABTC will come into effect from May 1, 2023)

*Please contact the immigration inspection agencies of the intended destination for the application of the Transit Visa Exemption Program.

4. Important notes :

①Applicants can collect the Visa one week after submitting the visa application in person (If applying for express service, it will take 2 to 3 working days. Express service charges an extra 21 euros).

② Applicants are kindly adviced to apply 3 weeks in advance of the intended date of entry into China. Applicants will be held responsible for any consequences if they fail to submit at an appropriate time, which may lead to either the issued visa expired or it being too late to get a visa before the intended entry date. 

③Applicants are kindly adviced to check all the information of the issued visa upon collection and if necessary raise queries. If there is no immediate query relating to the issued visa, the applicant is held responsible under any circumstances thereafter.
