On 7th August 2022, H.E. Ambassador Yu Dunhai gave an interview to NET TV, expressing China’s stern position on US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan region. Here are the main contents:

1. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip has aroused strong indignation among the Chinese people and sharp criticism from the international community. We believe this trip is a provocation and a political show. It seriously violates the one-China principle, infringes on China's sovereignty, and undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Many people describe it as utterly reckless, dangerous, and irresponsible. That's why China has to react forcefully to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

2. There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. It has been recognized by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China based on the one-China principle.

3. The One-China principle is also the centrepiece of the three Sino-US joint communiques and the premise and foundation for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between China and the US. In 1979, the US made a clear commitment that "the United States of America recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China".

4. The Chinese government approached the US government at different levels before Pelosi's visit. We have repeatedly expressed our strong opposition and the severe consequences it will bring about.

During the recent phone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden, President Biden reiterated that the one-China policy of the US has not changed and will not change and that the US does not support "Taiwan independence".

The US is saying one thing but doing another. Pelosi is the incumbent Speaker of the US House of Representatives and ranks second in the US presidential line of succession. Her visit to Taiwan, in whatever form, under whatever pretext, marks a violation of the promise the US has made and will seriously damage China-US relations.

5. Pelosi's trip has been condemned global wide. Many state leaders, particularly those in Asian and African countries, believe that her trip violates international norms, namely the one-China policy. I read an article in New York Times by columnist Thomas L. Friedman, calling Pelosi's trip utterly reckless, dangerous and irresponsible.

In Malta, there are also a lot of objections to her trip. The Maltese government has always adhered to the one-China policy since the establishment of our diplomatic relations 50 years ago, and the Taiwan question has never been an issue between China and Malta. China and Malta always understand and support each other in the international arena.

6. Recently, we have seen tensions across the Taiwan Strait, but it is the repeated movement by the Taiwan authority and the US that led to the tensions.

Taiwan authority is trying to seek independence incrementally, and they are seeking US support for their independence agenda. They rejected the 1992 Consensus in which the two sides across the Taiwan strait realized that there's only one China and the two sides belong to one China.

On the US part, the US tries to play the "Taiwan card" and tries to use Taiwan as an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" to contain China. They said they committed to the one-China policy, but in practice, they try to obscure and hollow it. That's the real cause of the instability across the Taiwan Strait.

The One-China policy is the key force for stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait. We urge the Taiwan authority to come back to the 1992 Consensus. We request the US government to come back to the One-China policy and honour the promises made by President Biden.

7. The reunification of China is the strong will of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, including those oversea Chinese. The Taiwan question has always been at the core of China's core interest. It’s also the common aspiration for all Chinese people to have an early reunification of our country.

Among the 5 Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, China is the only one that is not yet unified. But we believe that no force will hamper the reunification across the Taiwan Strait.

8. I worked in the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC for six years. From my perspective, Sino-US relations have always been complicated and consequential. China and the US are different in terms of history, culture, and political systems. But we need to agree to our disagreements and work together.

There are so many things that couldn’t be resolved without the cooperation between China and the US. We need to respect each other, treat each other on an equal basis and engage in various cooperation. That has always been China’s position.

On the other hand, if someone tries to violate China's sovereignty, integrity and other national interests, we will certainly not sit idle. We will fight back.

A sound Sino-US relationship benefits the two countries, the two people, and the world. No one would like to see the two countries sliding into a new cold war. China hopes to develop friendly relations with countries worldwide, but the premise is that the US respect China’s self-chosen path of development, its system and core interests.
