On the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Hon. Dr Ian Borg, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta delivered a video congratulatory message:

Excellencies,

Distinguished Guests,

It is indeed my pleasure to address you on this important occasion marking the 73rd Anniversary since the founding of the People's Republic of China.

This year marks a historic benchmark in our bilateral ties as we commemorate the 50th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Malta and the People's Republic of China.

Our longstanding friendship continues to grow from strength to strength. This is reflected in the agreements concluded over the past five decades between our countries in numerous sectors, including trade, culture, energy, education, and transport. The number of high-level exchanges over the years is also truly reflective of a dynamic relationship based on mutual trust and an exemplary line of communication. This paves the way to further consolidate our collaboration on the political and economic fronts to best serve the interests of our respective Peoples.

Malta and China have likewise developed vibrant cultural relations with a strong emphasis on people-to-people contacts and exchanges, which allow Maltese nationals to acquire a better understanding of China's rich culture and traditions.  In this spirit, I wish to commend the tireless work of the Embassy of China and the China Cultural Centre in organising various activities and exhibitions.

As we face difficult times at global and regional levels, I cannot but emphasize the importance on the need to uphold the principle of multilateralism on all fronts. As an elected member of the United Nations Security Council, Malta remains firm in its commitment to play our part in building the much-needed trust and political will to resolve these challenges while upholding the principles and values enshrined in the UN Charter.

The promotion of global peace, security and prosperity remains a collective priority for us all. Collaboration and partnership must supersede competition and confrontation, and Malta looks forward to collaborating closely and comprehensively with China on key issues of mutual and global concern.

Excellencies,

The Republic of Malta will continue to nurture our long-standing relations and I remain committed to further advance our ties during my term as Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade.

I wish to conclude by extending my wishes of good health and continued prosperity to the Government and People of the People's Republic of China.

Thank you.
