Chargé d'affaires Mr Peng Yijun Attends the Online Signing Ceremony to Establish International Sister-City Relations between Dujiangyan and Marsaskala

On 7th December 2022, Dujiangyan of China and Marsaskala of Malta held an online signing ceremony to establish international sister-city relations. Mr Peng Yijun, Chargé d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Malta, attended and addressed the ceremony. Mr Zhang Yadan, Mayor of Dujiangyan Municipal People's Government, Mr Wang Zhihai, Deputy Secretary of CPC Dujiangyan Municipal Committee, Ms. Tang Jilan, Vice Chairman of Sichuan Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Mr. Mario Calleja, Mayor of Marsaskala, Mr Jean Paul Gatt, Charge d 'Affaires of the Maltese Embassy in China, Mr Reno Calleja, President of Malta-China Friendship Society and other distinguished guests were also present.  

Chargé d'Affaires Peng Yijun congratulated the establishment of sister-city relations between Dujiangyan and Marsaskala. He said that on the occasion of the 50th anniversary, President Xi Jinping had a warm phone conversation with President George Vella, charting the course for the future of bilateral relations. In August, President Xi Jinping wrote a reply letter to the Science China Corner at St. Margaret College Secondary School Verdala, encouraging Maltese youth to promote mutual learning of civilizations and carry forward the friendship between the two peoples. Over the past 50 years, China and Malta enjoy healthy and stable relations with deepening friendship and mutual trust and fruitful cooperative achievements in various fields. The China-Malta relationship has become a model of relations between countries that are different in size, social system, history and culture.

Mr Peng Yijun said the 20th National Congress of the CPC pointed out that China is committed to its foreign policy goals of upholding world peace and promoting common development, and is dedicated to promoting a community with a shared future for mankind. Standing at the new historical starting point, China will keep adhering to the opening-up policy and win-win cooperation and is ready to work with Malta to expand strategic and practical cooperation in various fields to better benefit the peoples. The sister-city relationship between Dujiangyan and Marsaskala opens a new chapter for friendly exchanges and practical cooperation between the two cities. I hope the exchanges and cooperation between the two cities will continue to bear rich fruits and inject new impetus into the China-Malta friendship.

Mayor Zhang Yadan said that Dujiangyan and Marsaskala have maintained fruitful friendly cooperation and exchanges since 2019. Dujiangyan hopes to work together with Marsaskala to build an exchange and cooperation platform to complement each other's strengths and achieve win-win results.

Mayor Mario Calleja recalled his memory of the Malta-China friendship over the past 50 years. He said that this year is the best time for the two cities to sign the sister-city agreement. He is convinced that such friendly and cooperative relations will provide more opportunities for exchanges in culture, tourism, education and other fields between the people of the two places.

Mr Jean Paul Gatt, Mr Reno Calleja and Ms Tang Jilan expressed their anticipation of extending practical cooperation between the two cities to make new contributions to the China-Malta traditional friendship.

Guests present witnessed the signing of the MOU on the Establishment of Sister- City Relations and took a group photo online.
