On 29 September 2023, Chargé d'affaires Mr Peng Yijun attended the Reception celebrating the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. About 400 guests were invited to the reception, including H.E. President George Vella, Hon. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne, cabinet members, the leader of the Opposition, MPs, formal dignitaries, diplomatic corps and people from all walks of life.

Chargé d'affaires Peng said in his speech that China has made great achievements under the leadership of the Communist Party of China over the past 74 years. He introduced President Xi Jinping’s three major initiatives, namely the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and the achievements of the joint cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative. He said that China is ready to work together with Malta to promote bilateral relations to a new high.

H.E. President Vella said in his speech that Malta-China relations have continued gaining momentum over time, regardless of the difference in size and geography, relying only on the basis of mutual respect and appreciation. The two countries have built a close historical relationship that includes cooperation mostly in the fields of trade, health, education and culture. He said that Malta is ready to engage with China to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive contribution to the preservation of international peace and security.

During the reception, Chinese artists living in Malta presented cultural performances such as traditional Chinese musical instruments (Yang Qin), Peking Opera, martial arts and piano performances.
